Update on Child Death Prevention in Mali

Tue Dec 1, 2009, 9:29 PM
I'm exceedingly proud to announce that the Mali Health Organizing Project won the Global Giving Challenge! In three weeks we raised more than $37,000 from 338 unique donors which was matched with $13,000 and awarded a prize of $10,000 = $60,500! Many deserving thanks to everyone who contributed!

While the contest is over, the need is still very great for basic health services for slum children and their families in the third poorest nation in the world. You can still get the word out and donate (even a small amount goes a very long way!) to the Mali Health Organizing Project (with which I interned in the Spring of 2007 conducting microfinance research--work which has led to over 150 loans to entrepreneurial women).

If you'd like to know more or are interested in helping out, check out MHOP's website:

Again, thanks so much to everyone who helped with the contest!

I'm a Kristen with an "-En," which is technically the masculine spelling, as I'm named after my very Danish great-grandfather. I just thought "Kristinnamin" seemed the more phonetic spelling of the nickname I've had since I was 17.

I enjoy and take pride in doing quality work, helping out, and learning new things.

Currently, I'm the daytime manager at a small, "mom & pop"-type dog kennel in a little Texas town, a chauffeur/babysitter for two children under the age of twelve, and I'm working on finishing my Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and sociology at Southwestern University. I also play oboe semi-professionally and even played a solo in concert at Carnegie Hall once (in high school).

I've studied abroad in southwestern Turkey (Elmali/Hacimusalar) and Bamako, Mali (West Africa). Also abroad, I've visited England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Jamaica, and Mexico. I've also been to many places in the United States and hope to go to many more. I love travel, but I'm just as content simply spending hours outside alone trying to get nice photos out of my own backyard. Sometimes I'm lucky and other times I just get a nice farmer tan. ;-D

Aww :blushes: You are most welcome! :D Your photos are gorgeous and enlightening. Love them!!!

Well, when you get to Mali (as I'm sure you will someday), you need to visit Dogon country--it looks like something right out of a dark fairy tale. While hiking the Bandiagara Escarpment, if a dragon had suddenly flown over my head, I almost wouldn't have been surprised. But there are many intriguing people and places in Mali. I saw glimpses of many, though I mostly stayed in Bamako when I studied there in the Spring (dry season) of '07.

Unfortunately, I only had a really pathetic film camera with me at the time and was so leery of the photo developing places there that I waited until I got home to see how most of my pictures turned out. :-(

I interned with the Mali Health Organizing Project (malihealth.org) in a slum in Bamako. I'm an economics & sociology student, so my job was to research microfinance organizations there and abroad to help them find out how they could best utilize microfinance to help people in the slum alleviate some of the horrible, intensely debilitating poverty from which they suffer. Then, in the summer of that year, they used the findings and recommendations from my report and started making small, manageable business loans to local, entrepreneurial women. Since its inception, MHOP has made more than 100 microfinance loans in addition to all the other wonderful things the program does. Caitlin (MHOP's founder) has told me they still give all new volunteers a copy of my report to have and read as it's been so useful. :D

Here's a little video clip of the founder and the organization if you're interested: [link]
